This specification applies methods of preservation and finishing, dimensional tolerances, the characteristics and defects permitted in the finished product and the minimum requirements for quality control and inspection of wood sleepers, bearers, pitblocks and slipper runs.

This technical specification applies to you if you are working within TfL, including LU staff, Transport for London (TfL) engineering staff and all suppliers involved in the supply and installation of wood sleepers, bearers, pitblocks and slipper runs.

This technical specification does not cover composite materials that maybe used for sleepers & bearers instead of wood, these are covered by T0441. There is no technical specification for alternative material for pitblocks.

Purpose

The purpose of this technical specification is to stipulate the material requirements for wood sleepers, bearers, pitblocks and slipper runs that are to be used on the London Underground (LU) network.
