Structural Quality Steels

inactive
Organization: CSA
Publication Date: 1 January 1976
Status: inactive
Page Count: 39
scope:

This Standard covers structural quality steel plates, shapes, hollow. sections, sheet piling, and bars for general construction and engineering purposes.

This Standard includes materials having a number of different types, defined as follows:

(a) Type G-General Construction Steel.

Steels of this type meet minimum strength requirements; however, the chemical control is not such that all of these steels may be welded satisfactorily under normal field conditions. They are primarily designed for applications involving bolted connections, or for welding under carefully controlled shop conditions;

(b) Type W-Weldable Steels.

Steels of this type meet minimum strength requirements, and are suitable for general welded construction where notch toughness at low temperatures is not a prime consideration. Applications may include buildings, compression members of bridges, etc.;

(c) Type T-Weldable Low Temperature Steels.

Steels of this type are produced to rigorous requirements and are suitable for welded construction where improved low temperature notch toughness is a consideration. Applications may include tension members of bridges, etc.;

(d) Type R-Atmospheric Corrosion-Resistant Structural Steel.

Steels of this type display an atmospheric corrosion resistance approximately 4 times that of plain carbon steels*. These steels may be readil welded up to the maximum thickness covered by thls Standar. Applications include unpainted siding, unpainted light structural members, etc., where notch toughness at low temperatures is not a consideration;

(e) Type A-Atmospheric Corrosion-Resistant Structural Steel With Improved Low Temperature Properties.

Steels of this type display an atmospheric corrosion resistance of approximately 4 times that of plain carbon steels*. These steels may be welded readily under normal conditions, and display improved 10w temperature notch toughness. These steels are used in bridges and other critical areas in the unpainted condition;

(f) Type Q-Quenched and Tempered Low Alloy Steel Plate.

Steels of this type display a very high yield strength and good resistance to brittle fracture, and are especially suited for bridges and similar structures. While these steels may be readily welded, the welding and fabrication techniques are of fundamental importance and must not adversely affect the properties of the plate, especially the heat affected zone.

A number of strength levels are available under this Standard, and are designated by the approximate yield strength in ksi. The grades, types, and strength levels normally available are shown in Table 1.
