Purpose.
We, the Federal Aviation Administration, or FAA, wrote this order to prescribe the responsibilities and procedures for approving replacement and modification articles for installation on type-certificated products. It implements an approval process required by Title 14, of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR), part 21, subpart K for issuing a parts manufacturer approval (PMA). We also explain the role of a designated engineering representative (DER) and organization designation authorization (ODA) along with their organization management office (OMT) in the PMA process. FAA Order 8120.22, Production Approval Procedures, contains the procedures for evaluation, approval, and management of the production activities of manufacturers who produce articles under PMA.
