Introduction

This Instruction covers the maintenance procedure for all diesel and electrically driven compressed air installations associated with signalling supplies.

Arrangements for initiating and carrying out the work shall be made with the Area Signal & Telecommunications Engineer's representative, by the Area Electrification Engineer's representative, before any work which may affect traffic operations is carried out on air/signalling supply equipment. These arrangements must include for the provision of temporary air/power equipment when necessary.

The person responsible for carrying out the work must obtain agreement through the Area Signal & Telecommunications Engineer's site representative, from the Area Operating Control, Regulator or Signalman, at the signal box(es) concerned before interrupting the air/power supplies and before reinstating the equipment back to normal conditions.

At locations where control, alarms or indications of air/signalling supplies are taken back to an Electric Control Room, the person responsible for carrying out the work must advise the Electric Control Operator both at the commencement and also at the completion of any work detailed in this document.

Defects found during the course of the work, whether within the scope of this order or not, must be immediately dealt with as may be appropriate.

This instruction should be read in conjunction with the appropriate manufacturer's Instruction and Spares Manuals.

All details of inspection, repairs, etc. to be recorded in the Sub-Station Log Book.

All safety precautions must be observed.

Whenever possible, maintenance of associated equipment shall be carried out concurrently.

Inspection and testing of all pressure vessels, (including inter/after coolers) is the responsibility of an approved contractor.

In general, two electrically driven compressor equipments are provided at each location. These have been arranged so that one of the two sets of equipments acts as a "duty" set and supplies the required load, whilst the second acts as a "standby" set and comes into operation only on failure of the "duty" machine to meet the load. Under normal operating conditions, each equipment set should work alternately, one week duty and one week standby.

It is desirable that the maintenance procedure as laid down in this document shall be carried out on each set of equipments as soon as possible after it has completed its turn of duty.

After completion of maintenance, all locks, keys and tools shall be returned, clean, to their proper places.
