Organization: NR
Publication Date: 7 September 2019
Status: active
Page Count: 30
scope:

This Network Rail Guidance Note provides guidance on the content required for Level 3 maintenance documentation for diesel or electrically driven compressed air installations, where the original manufacturers maintenance documentation is no longer available or deemed insufficient or not-appropriate e.g. following modification of the equipment.

The Guidance Note details the key components of the compressor set that require maintenance and the main activities that the required maintenance will entail.

The contents of this Guidance Note should be applied by competent person(s) intending to author Level 3 maintenance tasks to cover the maintenance activities relating to diesel or electrically driven compressed air installations where there is no appropriate Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) information available.

All clauses in this Guidance Note will not necessarily be applicable to all variants of asset owned or used by network rail - the author of the Level 3 documentation is to determine the applicability of each clause for application to a particular asset or group of assets.

All efforts have been made to include all of the main components, but it should not be assumed that this is an exhaustive list.

In the first instance OEM maintenance documentation for the specific compressor set should always be used.

This Guidance Note does not cover the diesel or electric motor elements of the installation.

Purpose

It is intended that the application of this Guidance Note by a technically competent individual will enable them to author appropriate Level 3 maintenance documentation to allow the on-going routine maintenance of diesel or electrically driven compressed air installations associated with signalling supplies. This Guidance Note will also serve as a reference for document reviewers and approvers as part of the documentation quality process.

This Guidance Note sits alongside the required legislation, not least the Pressure System Safety Regulations and does not seek to replace their content.

This Guidance Note seeks to fill a gap when:

• The original manufactures maintenance information is no longer available.

• The equipment has been updated or modified beyond the scope of the original maintenance information.

• To provide a consistent approach to maintenance of compressed air installations

• A record of best practice
