This standard provides the item marking requirements and methods for identification of items of military property produced, stocked, stored, and issued by or for the Department of Defense.
Military items covered by the following documents are excluded from the provisions of this standard unless otherwise specified in detail specifications, standards, or contracts.

The acquiring activity should evaluate the requirements (sections, paragraphs, or sentences) in this standard to determine the extent to which each requirement can be tailored and be placed on contract in order to impose only the minimum essential needs of the Government.
