This standard defines terms for use in spoken language, technical documentation and publications. This standard is applicable for fiber optic components and products for image and data transmission (distances up to 100 m) as well as for transmission of light and optical radiation in the near infrared and ultraviolet spectral range.

The standard is not applicable for fiber optic components and products, intended for telecommunication and data transmission over distances larger than 100 m.

The purpose of this standard is to create consistent terms to enable communication inside the area of application, as well as between related areas of application.
