Fornisce le procedure di prova per la valutazione termica e la classificazione dei sistemi di isolamento usati e proposti per l'uso delle macchine elettriche rotanti in corrente continua e alternata sino a 50 MVA e 15 kV inclusi. Le procedure di prova sono comparative per il fatto che le prestazioni di un sistema di isolamento prescelto vengono paragonate a quelle di uno di riferimento con provata esperienza di servizio.
