Diese Europäische Norm enthält die Anfangs- und Maßanforderungen zu Beginn der Lebensdauer sowie die optischen, mechanischen und umweltbezogenen Leistungsanforderungen, die ein Fusionsspleißschutz einer Einmodenfaser erfüllen muss, um als EN-Normprodukt eingestuft zu werden.

Obwohl die nach diesem Dokument qualifizierten Produkte Einmodenfasern der Typen B1.1 und B1.3 nach EN 60793-2-50 sind, können sie auch für Fusionsspleißschutze von Mehrmodenfasern mit einem Glasmanteldurchmesser von 125 μm sowie für andere Einmodenfasern mit einem Glasmanteldurchmesser von 125 μm für andere Wellenlängen geeignet sein.
