This Code prescribes minimum requirements for materials, design, fabrication, assembly, test and inspection of refrigerant and brine piping for temperatures as low as 320 F (whether erected on the premises on factory assembled) except as specifically excluded in the following paragraphs.
Users are advised that other piping Code Sections provide requirements for refrigeration piping in their respective jurisdictions.
This Code shall not apply to:
(a) Any self-contained or unit systems subject to the requirements of Underwriters' Laboratories or other nationally recognized testing laboratory.
(b) Water piping.
(c) Piping designed for external or internal pressure not exceeding 15 psig regardless of size. 500.1.5 Piping includes pipe, flanges, bolting, gaskets, valves, fittings, the pressure containing parts of other components such as expansion joints, strainers and devices which serve such purposes as mixing, separating, snubbing, distributing, metering or controlling flow, and pipe supporting fixtures and structural attachments. It does not include pressure vessels, compressors or pumps, heat exchangers including coil type, but does include all connecting refrigerant and brine piping starting at the first joint adjacent to such apparatus. It does not include support structures.
