scope:

Purpose. This standard establishes the definitions, ground rules, and mission profiles to determine the performance of fixed-wing air vehicles. This document is not intended to impose air vehicle performance requirements. It is intended to provide all conditions and limitations inherent in the definitions and ground rules which must be met when any item of performance included herein is calculated. It is not the purpose of this document to levy required values for these items of performance. Those requirements must be included in the appropriate Program Specifications.

Applicability. The subject-matter contained in this standard applies to the flight performance of manned and unmanned fixed-wing (non-rotary wing) air vehicles. However, for unmanned air vehicles, the definitions, ground rules, and mission profiles may not be all-inclusive. This standard may be applied to conventional, short takeoff and landing (STOL), and vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) capable air vehicles. The sections of this document which specifically address the short takeoff of STOL and V/STOL air vehicles also apply to Short Takeoff Vertical Landing (STOVL) air vehicles. Furthermore, these definitions and ground rules apply equally to operations from large deck carriers and Marine amphibious assault ("L" class) ships.
