This specification describes flexible, open-celled polyurethane foams to be used in seating applications. For headrests and armrests, see GMW15064.

Material Description. These foams will be polyether based and can be molded into parts with multiple hardness and/or density areas.

Applicability. The polyurethane material specified in this standard is recommended for use in automotive seat cushion and seat back applications. This specification segments polyurethane seating material into five types. The five types are based on material performance, and they do not address the actual part design particularly thickness. These standards are to be considered minimum compliance. Optimum seat conditions for maximum comfort and durability may require values different than those shown in the specification, but this will be program and part specific. Additional seat foam designations are provided in the Global Subsystem Technical Specification (GSSTS) for seat assembly/seat structure

Remarks.

Recycled or Alternate Materials. Recycled polyurethane materials or bio-based materials may be used for parts under this specification. Prior to incorporating recycled or bio-based materials into a finished product, the supplier shall provide data showing that no decrease in performance or durability will occur due to the use of the reclaimed or bio-based materials.

Low Emission Foam. Specialty foams required for low emission applications may require deviations to the mechanical properties listed in Table 1.
