This Defence Standard specifies the steel, hexagon, UNF bolts, selected in accordance with the guidance given in DEF STAN 53 - 12 (latest issue), to be used, with the exceptions stated below, by the Ministry of Defence in designs based on imperial units and, wherever practicable, for the maintenance of existing equipment.

The bolts covered by this Standard are not intended for use in aerospace vehicles or their close support equipments which are dealt with in DEF STAN 53 - 9 (latest issue).

They are not intended for applications in temperatures above 300°C or in special situations in which there is a critical requirement for bolts of higher tensile or corrosion-resisting stesls or with surface coatings other than those specified in this Standard.

These bolts are intended for use only in those applications where the Design Authority considers the use of steel bolts of the UNF series to be appropriate.
