scope:
This specification relates to an LF Quality paint system, consisting of one coat of priming paint and one coat of a nearly-matt finishing paint, for the protection of ammunition and steel ammunition packages.
The paints are formulated to cure by stoving for a period agreed between the paint manufacturer and the customer. The system is suitable for application to clean steel, phosphated steel, or suitably pre-treated surfaces of light alloy, copper or zinc-sprayed steel.
The paint system when stoved and allowed to cool to room temperature, should permit the handling and stacking of ammunition without damage to the paint coating. The paint system applied to the exterior of phosphated steel ammunition should protect it against corrosion for 10 years in temperate climates, under all but the most aggressive conditions.
The designation 'LF Quality' refers to the restriction of the lead content of the material and its containers in order to permit its use in an explosive or other environment where such restriction is necessary. This does not imply that this material is suitable for use in permanent contact with explosives and Design Authorities should therefore seek advice on such applications from the Director, Propellants, Explosives and Rocket Motor Establishment, Waltham Abbey.
