This specification covers packings and gaskets intended for use at a
temperature range of −65° to 160°F in hydraulic systems in accordance
with Specification MIL-P-5514, MIL-H-5440, and shock absorbers. These
rings should not be used in conjunction with any hydraulic fluid other
than that conforming to Specification MIL-H-5606, unless otherwise
specified by the procuring activity.
V-ring, class A packings, and O-ring, class B packings, are intended
for use in shock absorber struts, actuating cylinders, valves, and in
all parts of hydraulic mechnisms with operating pressure of from 0 to
1,500 psi, except that O-rings can be used at higher pressures in
accordance with Specification MIL-P-5514.
U-cup-type packings of class B material for use in hydraulic systems,
brake cylinders, brake valves, and other similar mechanisms must be
made of suitable compounds and tested by the user of the cups to the
applicable requirements of this specification, except that tests will
be made in the individual units for which the cups were designed, under
normal operating pressures and representative conditions, including
extreme temperature requirements.
D-ring-type packings are intended for use in landing gear shock strut
as rod seal only.
(See Specification MIL-P-5514).
