scope:
This is the second edition of CSA Standard C83-M (now CAN/CSA-C83- M87), Communication and Power Line Hardware, written in SI (metric) units.
It supersedes CSA Standard C83-M1980 and its Supplements/ C83S1-1981/ C83S2-1983, and C83S3-1985.
The imperial version of this Standard, C83-1970, and its Supplements, C83S1-1973, C83S2-1974, and C83S3-1977, are now withdrawn.
This Standard includes the following:
(a) general requirements for hardware used in the construction of communication and power lines;
(b) over 110 Item Standards written in metric, most of which supersede the equivalent Item Specifications given in C83-1970 and its Supplements; the former are, in most cases, a hard metric conversion of the latter;
(c) three Appendices A, B, and C giving information on sampling and inspection of line hardware.
(d) an Appendix D providing a cross reference of Standards and property classes for metric and imperial Standards.
Both manufacturers and users are to be cautioned that interchangeability of imperial and metric components may not be possible.
Appendices A and B are included to assist those unfamiliar with statistical sampling or in need of ready reference for sampling plans acceptable to industry in general. Some of these were extracted from MIL-STD-105B, which, although superseded, is nonetheless usable. The presence of the sampling tables in the appendices should not be thought to preclude the use of any other sampling plans that will satisfy the AQL requirements specified in the Standard for inspection purposes.
This Standard was prepared by the Technical Committee on Communication and Power Line Hardware under the jurisdiction of the Standards Steering Committee for Electrical Engineering Standards and was approved by these Committees. It has been approved as a National Standard of Canada by the Standards Council of Canada.
