Introduction

This Part of the Defence Standard describes the preferred techniques to be used for the measurement of the electromagnetic compatibility characteristics of electrical and electronic support equipments. The equipment shall be no larger than a 1 m cube and be procured by the Ministry of Defence for use in a civilian environment.

Although EMC measurements are usually specified in terms of absolute units, precise measurement is often difficult, the result depending on the method used. In the interests of repeatability, therefore, the preferred methods should be used. Alternative measurement techniques to those prescribed in this Standard may be permitted but only if their equivalence can be demonstrated to the satisfaction of the Procuring Authority. Any deviations from the practices laid down in this Standard shall be recorded and included with the test results.

The procedures and limits outlined within this Section produce tests which are generally more stringent than those evoked by the European Directive 89/336/EEC. These reflect the harsher environment in which military support equipment will operate. It is not permissible or acceptable to compare or cross reference test results from Euro Norms or Commercial Specifications with the procedures and limits contained within this Section. Compliance with this Section may be used in a Technical Construction File as defined by the European Directive 89/336/EEC to demonstrate partial compliance.

Tests contained in this section are applicable to equipment that operate from an external power supply but whose operation is not dependant upon signals from other equipment via interface cables, unless they form part of the same system. An equipment may be comprised of either a single or multi-EUT device. This section is for equipment not deployed in the battlefield scenario or a military platform and will not be operated within 15 metres of an intentional transmitter or receiver

The tests are grouped under headings relating to conducted emission and susceptibility, radiated emission and susceptibility, and electrostatic discharge. All electrical equipment shall be subjected to emission testing, but only those incorporating electronics shall be subjected to susceptibility testing. In some equipment applications additional tests may be required and it is the responsibility of the Procuring Authority to ensure that such tests are specified in the Test Plan.

The tests described are not intended to be regarded as production tests, although they may in certain circumstances be suitable for this purpose.
