AIM

The aim of STANAG 4312, Part II, is to establish the prerequisites for interoperability of the different Army Air Defence Surveillance Systems in use by Allied Ground Forces.

In this STANAG Army Air Defence Systems will be considered interoperable, if surveillance data (low level air picture as described in Annex A) can be exchanged. The interface and the required messages are agreed upon in this STANAG.

With the implementation of the ACCS it will in principle be possible to distribute Air Defence Surveillance data from different sensors to all users, including those Army Air Defence Systems operating in the Forward Combat Zone.

But despite the possibility of an information exchange via ACCS, it is necessary that Allied Land Forces can directly exchange the low level air picture produced by their own sensors.

This will ensure that

- the time for information transmission is kept to a minimum

- priorities of the Army for the information exchange are followed and

- full use is made of the low-level-detection capability of Army Air Defence sensors.

This in turn may help to prevent Army Air Defence forces from being taken by surprise by suddenly appearing, low flying enemy aircraft.
