This Standard applies to elevating rolling work platforms used on a level surface and that are incapable of being self-propelled from an operating station on the work platform, and that are used to position personnel, along with their tools and necessary materials, at overhead work locations.

Purpose

The purpose of this Standard is to outline the requirements and recommended practices for manufacturers, dealers, and users of such work platforms to achieve the following objectives:

(a) Prevention of personal injuries or accidents;

(b) Uniformity in ratings;

(c) Standards for design and manufacture;

(d) Establishment of performance criteria;

(e) Standards for testing and inspection;

(f) Understanding by manufacturers, dealers, and users of their respective responsibilities.

Equipment not Covered

This Standard does not apply to:

(a) Vehicle mounted devices such as truck mounted devices covered by CSA Standard C225, Vehicle-Mounted Aerial Devices;

(b) Self-propelled elevating work platforms covered in CSA Standard CAN3-B354.2, Self-Propelled Elevating Work Platforms for Use on Paved/Slab Surfaces;

(c) Self-propelled elevating work platforms covered in CSA Standard CAN3-B354.3, Self-Propelled Elevating Work Platforms for Use as "Off-Slab" Units;

(d) Self-propelled, boom-type elevating work platforms covered in CSA Standard CAN3-B354.4, Boom-Type Elevating Work Platforms;

(e) Suspended powered platforms used for construction and building maintenance, covered by CSA Standard Z271, Safety Code for Powered Platforms;

(f) Construction hoists used to raise and lower materials and personnel to different elevations, covered by CSA Standard Z256, Safety Code for Material Hoists, and CSA Standard Z185, Safety Code for Personnel Hoists;

(g) Order pickers and similar mobile personnel and material elevating platforms such as those covered by CSA Standard B335.1, Low Lift and High Lift Trucks;

(h) Permanently installed (nonmobile) elevating lifts used to transport personnel between different elevations;

(i) Fire fighting equipment;

(j) Build-up type frame scaffolds.
