scope:
This Standard covers mechanical couplings used to axially join pipes and fittings in nonpressure drain, waste, and vent (DWV) and sewer systems inside and outside of buildings, above ground, and buried underground.
Note: Caution should be used when installing mechanical couplings at low temperatures. The coupling manufacturer should be consulted.
This Standard includes requirements for mechanical couplings of the following types:
Type 1-Couplings used primarily to join pipe of the same material. The couplings incorporate a centre stop and may have a shield.
Type 2-Couplings used primarily in material transitions. A centre stop is optional. Also included are repair couplings used to join pipe of the same size and material.
Note: Pipe and pipe fitting materials that mag be joined include
(a) aluminum (as covered by CSA Standard CAN3-B281);
(b) asbestos cement (CSA Standards B127.1 and B127.2);
(c) cast iron (CSA Standard CAN3-B70);
(d) concrete (CSA Standard A257);
(e) copper (ASTM Standard B306);
(f) ABS (CSA Standards CAN3-B181.1 and CAN/CSA-B182.1);
(g) PVC (CSA Standards CAN/CSA-B181.2, CAN/CSA-B182.1, and CAN/CSA-B182.2);
(h) steel (ASTM Standard A53)j and
(i) vitrified clay (CSA Standards A60.1 and A60.3).
The joining of pipes and fittings with bell and spigot ends that utilize an elastomeric gasket seal is not covered by this Standard.
This Standard is not intended to restrict the use of alternative materials or methods provided they meet the intent of this Standard.
