Sectional Specification for Fiber Optic Communications Cable for Outside Plant Use
Organization: | TIA |
Publication Date: | 1 November 1993 |
Status: | inactive |
Page Count: | 46 |
scope:
This Sectional Specification is intended for use only in conjunction with Basic Specification EIA/TIA-455-A. Generic Specification TIA/EIA-4720000-A, and with appropriate Detail Specification(s). It covers fiber optic cables intended for use in communications system and in other systems employing similar technologies.
This Sectional Specification covers the requirements for optical cables containing multimode or single-mode optical fibers, or both. Such cables may include electrical conductors. It is intended that the optical fibers meet the requirements of the EIA/TIA-492-Series Specifications.
This Sectional Specification covers the requirements for optical cables that are designed for outside plant use. Unless otherwise specified in the Detail Specification, the following characteristics shall apply:
- the cables shall be capable of being installed at a minimum temperature of −30°C;
- the cable operating temperature range shall be at least −40°C to +65°C.
- cables shall have a minimum bend diameter not greater that 20X cable diameter when installed, and 30X cable diameter during installation.
The object of this Specification is to delineate the general requirements for outside plant cable and to assist those who prepare Detail Specifications using this document and other applicable Specifications.
This object is carried out, in part, by prescribing preferred ratings and characteristics, and in selecting from Generic Specification TIA/EIA-4720000-A the appropriate Quality Assessment procedures, tests, and measurement methods.
Clause 4 describes preferred values for construction characteristics and for dimensional, mechanical, optical, and environmental attributes.
Clause 5 describes the Quality Assessment procedures that includes a summary, in Table 1, of qualification approval attributes, methods, sampling, and requirements to be placed in the Detail Specification. The section also describes the Quality Assessment procedures that includes a summary, in Table 2, of the above information, as well as the Quality Conformance Inspection methods for conformance.
Clause 6 outlines the test and measurement procedures for the attributes outlined in Tables 1 and 2.
This Specification also indicates which test options and performance requirements may be left to the Detail Specification preparer via a Blank Detail Specification that references this Sectional Specification.
