This Standard prescribes requirements for the classification and certification of low alloy steel electrodes for shielded metal arc welding.

Electrodes specified in this Standard are classified according to the

(a) chemical requirements of undiluted weld metal (Table 1);

(b) electrode covering and the usability characteristics of the electrode (Table 2);

(c) mechanical properties of the weld metal, in the as-welded or heat-treated condition (Tables 3 and 4); and

(d) positions of welding for which the electrodes are suitable.

Any electrode certified under one classification shall not be certified under any other classification.

Note: The classification system is explained in Clause A1.2 of Appendix A.
