Organization: NPFC
Publication Date: 14 August 1998
Status: inactive
Page Count: 8
scope:

This drawing describes the requirements for a variable, panel mounted, resistor.

The complete PIN shall be as follows:

The type of bushing is identified by a single letter in accordance with table I TABLE I. Bushing.

Letter Bushing type Bushing length (inch) ------------------------------------------------------------ G Plain .250 N Plain .375 H Plain .500 M Locking .375 L Locking .500 S Locking .625 T Panel watertight - Plain .250 P Panel watertight - Plain .375 E Panel watertight - Plain .500 Y Panel watertight - Locking .375 Z Panel watertight - Locking .500

The shaft length is identified by a single digit and measured from the mounting surface in inches and eighths (see example).

Example:

4 = 4/8 or .500 inch.

5 = ⅝ or .625 inch.

6 = 6/8 or .750 inch.

7 = ⅞ or .875 inch.

The shaft ending shall be designated by a single letter in accordance with table II and figure 1. TABLE II. Shaft ending.

Letter Description ---------------------- S Standard slot F Standard flat

The nominal total resistance value expressed in ohms is identified by a three-digit number. The first two digits represent significant figures and the last specifies the number of zeros to follow. Preferred nominal values are listed in table III. TABLE III. Preferred values.

100 Ω 1 kΩ 10 kΩ 100 kΩ 1 MΩ 200 Ω 2 kΩ 20 kΩ 200 kΩ 2 MΩ 250 Ω 2.5 kΩ 25 kΩ 250 kΩ 2.5 MΩ 500 Ω 5 kΩ 50 kΩ 500 kΩ 5 MΩ

The taper type and resistance tolerance shall be identified by a single letter in accordance with table IV and figure 2. TABLE IV. Taper type and resistance tolerance.

Letter Taper type Resistance tolerance -------------------------------------------------------------- U Linear (U) ±10 percent M Linear (U) ±20 percent A Clockwise modified logarithmic (A) ±10 percent R Clockwise modified logarithmic (A) ±20 percent B Counterclockwise modified logarithmic (B) ±10 percent T Counterclockwise modified logarithmic (B) ±20 percent S Modified linear (S) ±10 percent Y Modified linear (S) ±20 percent
