This INTERIM Defence Standard specifies the requirements for nine types of wires and cables insulated with cross linked polyolefin and sheathed with cross linked polyvinylidene fluoride.
These wires and cables are suitable for use where the potential between conductors, or between a conductor and the equipment structure, or between a conductor and a metal braid surrounding the cable does not exceed 600 V (rms), where the frequency does not exceed 1600 Hz and where the combination of ambient temperature and temperature rise due to the current produces a stabilized conductor temperature not exceeding 140°C.
These wires and cables are suitable for fixed wiring at temperatures down to minus 75°C but are not suitable for severe flexing at temperatures below minus 40°C.
These wires and cables do not support combustion and will withstand contamination with ester based lubricants and with ester based hydraulic fluids when tested in accordance with BS G230 test 29.
The nine types, differing in their conductors and total thickness of insulation (thus in their weight and resistance to abrasion) are available unscreened, Tables IA to IC, or screened and jacketed Tables ID to IJ as specified.
