scope:
ATP-8 contains doctrine and information necessary to the understanding of all phases of an amphibious operation. It includes the main planning factors and information on current agreed organizations and command structure, which are amplified by a step-by-step guide for those concerned with the production of an amphibious plan. Guidance is provided for the execution of an amphibious operation and the ideal sequence of such an operation from its inception to its completion. The final chapters give guidance for other amphibious operations, such as raids, demonstrations, and withdrawals; landings in low visibility or cold weather; and operations in times of tension. This publication is limited to the basic principles underlying amphibious warfare and will be used primarily as a repository for doctrine only.
PURPOSE
The purpose of ATP-8, Doctrine for Amphibious Operations, is to provide common doctrine for amphibious operations so that those concerned with planning and executing such operations may integrate varying assets from many Nations and Services into a coherent and workable operation of war.
ATP-8 provides background information to support the amphibious warfare chapter of ATP 1, Volume I, and also provides Allied forces with a knowledge of amphibious operations. Its primary aim is to ensure basic uniformity while permitting the development and flexibility required by each tactical situation. It is not intended to prevent an officer exercising tactical command from initiating and issuing special instructions or from conceiving and developing new operational procedures.
