This specification covers lanterns with an adjustable focus reflectortype light equipped with a switch and mounted on an elastic band to be worn on the user's head or hat. The lantern is connected by a flexible cord to a battery case that is fitted to be carried on the belt. The battery case shall accommodate four standard "D" type dry cell batteries connected in series.

The portable electric lanterns covered by this specification shall be of one type and two classes:

Class 1 with 0.15-ampere lamps (see 6.1.1) Class 2 - with 0.30-ampere lamps (see 6.1.2).
