scope:
STANAGs 3150 and 3151 (see Annexes A and B to this chapter) provide for the operation of a uniform system of classification and identification of items of supply for the purpose of:
(1) avoiding the creation of different item identifications covering the same item of supply,
(2) ascertaining which items are interchangeable,
(3) promoting standardization,
(4) facilitating logistic support in and between the NATO and other participating Armed Forces,
(5) facilitating links between the Armed Forces codification systems and industry,
(6) improving equipment management by encouraging efficiency and economy in logistic operations.
Each ratifying and participating country and NAMSA should maintain files in which item identification data is recorded. These files may be consulted by all participants.
Certain cross servicing functions related to the operation of the NATO Codification System (NCS) are not suitable for execution by an individual country.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to cover the execution of these functions has therefore been established between the Group of National Directors on Codification and NATO Maintenance and Supply Agency (NAMSA).
A list of the functions executed under this MOU is contained as Appendix 1 to Annex G. The list will be reviewed annually by the countries and NAMSA.
