scope:
Purpose. This standard provides the requirements for the uniform marking of military supplies and equipment for shipment and storage. It accommodated the requirements for movement processing as specified in DOD 4000. 25-1-M, Military Standard Requisitioning and Issue Procedures (MILSTRIP). DOD 4000. 25-2-M, Military Standard Transaction Reporting and Accounting Procedures (MILSTRAP); and DOD 4500. 32-R, Military Standard Transportation and Movement Procedures (MILSTAMP).
NOTE: All marking exceptions and exemptions to this standard must be specified in the acquisition document. Additional marking requirements, not specified in this standard, shall be included in the acquisition document.
Application. Unless exempted in whole or in part by paragraphs 4.12.1 through 4.12.9 herein, the marking of all supplies and equipment, including materiel shipped from storage, shall be as specified in this standard. As defined in ASTM D996, Standard Terminology of packaging and distribution Environments, marking is "the application of numbers, letter, labels, tags, symbols, or colors to provide identification and to expedite handling during shipment and storage."
English-metric conversion. In order to accommodate the requirements of DOD Directive 4120.18, Metric System of Measurement, two table describing English-metric conversion applicable to this standard are provided. For convenience in calculation, metric equivalents are expressed to two decimal places (nearest hundredth), wherever practical.
