This Defence Standard establishes a framework for contracting for Obsolescence Management and provides guidance in planning a cost effective obsolescence management process, that is applicable throughout all phases the product life cycle. This standard is applicable to all defence products that include electronic, electrical and electro-mechanical components, although its use can be extended to include other products and processes. Guidance at electronic component level is available with respect to original selection in Def Stan 59-36 and with respect to obsolescence in BSS PD 6614.

Obsolescence Management covers the following areas:

a. Legacy Equipment - i.e. equipment whose development is complete.

b. Technology Insertion - i.e. updates to legacy equipment (utilising developing technologies).

c. New equipment.
