この規格は、金属部品の切削加工(切削屑を生じる加工)により得られる形体において、図面中に個々に公差が指示されていない幾何特性に適用する公差(以下普通幾何公差という。)について適用する。

This standard covers the tolerances applying to the dimensions of geometrical features of metallic parts made through cutting work, to which the tolerance values are not attached individually but shown collectively on drawings (hereinafter called general geometrical tolerance). Cutting work means the machining process in which cutting tools produce chips.
