Preface

This is the fifth edition of CSA Z245.20, External fusion bond epoxy coating for steel pipe, and the fourth edition of CSA Z245.21, External polyethylene coating for pipe. They supersede the previous editions of CSA Z245.20 published in 2002, 1998, 1992, and 1986 and the previous editions of CSA Z245.21 published in 2002, 1998, and 1992.

CSA Z245.20 deals with the requirements for external fusion bond epoxy coating for steel pipe. The main differences from the previous edition are as follows:

• requirements for coating with a glass transition temperature higher than 110 °C have been added;

• requirements for two-layer and three-layer coating systems have been added;

• six different coating systems have been identified;

• requirements for residual magnetism have been added;

• the requirements for marking have been revised;

• the requirements for determining the thermal characteristics of the epoxy powder and coating have been revised;

• an optional test to determine the gouge resistance of the coating has been added;

• a requirement to determine the surface roughness of anti-slip overcoat systems has been added; and

• for coating with a glass transition temperature of 110 °C or lower, the following requirements have been revised:

- qualification test requirements (Table 2);

- laboratory coating test requirements (Table 3); and

- production coating test requirements (Table 4).

CSA Z245.21 deals with the requirements for external polyethylene coating for pipe. The main differences from the previous edition are as follows:

• the definition of adhesive lot has been revised;

• a requirement to conduct the tests on the incoming raw material at the application facility, unless otherwise agreed by the purchaser, has been added;

• requirements for residual magnetism have been added;

• the acceptance criteria for holiday inspection have been revised;

• a test frequency has been specified for test rings on pipe that is stripped and recoated;

• the requirements for patching have been revised;

• the requirements for marking have been revised;

• the requirement to conduct a water absorption test on the adhesive has been deleted;

• an optional test to determine the gouge resistance of the coating has been added; and

• the requirements for testing the incoming powder primer have been revised (Table 7).

These Standards were prepared by the Subcommittee on Materials, under the jurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Petroleum and Natural Gas Industry Pipeline Systems and Materials and the Strategic Steering Committee on Petroleum and Natural Gas Industry Systems, and have been formally approved by the Technical Committee.
