Guideline VDI 3469 Part 2 covers the production and processing of Type NT fibrous cement (asbestos-free technology) made from synthetically produced and natural organic fibres and is valid only in conjunction with guideline VDI 3469 Part 1.

In contrast to guideline VDI 3469 Part 2:1999-02 this guideline no longer contains any advice on asbestos cement products. This is because a Europe-wide ban on hazardous materials containing asbestos came into force on 1st January 2005 in accordance with Directive 76/769/EWG and Directive 2003/18/EB concerning hazardous materials and preparations. A voluntary industry agreement between the Wirtschaftsverband Asbestzement (now the Verband der Faserzementindustrie e.V. (Association of the Fibrous Cement Industry)) and the Federal Government for complete replacement of asbestos in building products was concluded in Germany as early as 1984 (Phasing-out Commitment). In fulfilment of the agreement the building products in the Federal German Republic have been free from asbestos since the end of 1991 and the civil engineering products since the end of 1993 [1].

For demolition, refurbishment and repair work involving asbestos cement products in building and civil engineering reference should be made to the relevant guidelines, in particular to TRGS 519.
