scope:
The VDI/VDE 2180 series of guidelines consists of the following parts:
Part 1 Introduction, terms, concept
Part 2 Management system
Part 3 Plant engineering, realization and operation
Part 4 Calculating methods
Part 5 Recommendations for practical use
This guideline applies to installations in the process industry, such as the chemical and petrochemical industries, particularly when they are subject to the German Major Accidents Ordinance (Störfallverordnung - 12. BImsSchV). It is based on the harmonized standard DIN EN 61511 (IEC 61511). This guideline describes how to protect these installations by means of process control engineering (PCE). For how to implement process control technology within the overall safety concept, see VDI/VDE 2180 Part 2, Section 1 and Figure 1.
The present provides support for engineering, realization and operation of safety instrumented systems.
This guideline is only valid in conjunction with guideline VDI/VDE 2180 Part 1.
