scope:
The data in the tables of this standard apply to stamping tools with a side length of more than 1000 mm.
The values indicated are recommended minimum wall thicknesses with regard to casting requirements. If the design calls for greater wall thicknesses, these must be provided.
It is essential to check whether tools (dies) subject to extreme loads need thicker walls to ensure component rigidity and to avoid the risk of cracking. This applies, for example, to
- forming dies for high-strength sheet steel
- dies with very large dimensions, some components of which may have higher residual stresses
- internal stiffening ribs beneath pressurised structures
All dimensions refer to finished dimensions, i.e. casting allowances are to be added. The tabular values in Section 5 to Section 8 must be increased proportionally if the distance between ribs is greater than 400 mm or if there is a thickening in the forming area.
With complex dies it is generally advisable to determine the dimensions in consultation with the appointed foundry.
