Standard VDI 4709 applies for central vacuum cleaning systems suitable for the extraction and disposal of ordinary house dust, e. g. in residential buildings (single and multi-family houses), office and administration buildings, banks, hotels, industrial and commercial buildings (e. g. department stores, retail outlets, clean rooms), accommodation facilities (nursing homes, student dormitories), schools, childcare centres. They may also be used in public transport (ships, trains, planes, busses) and in equestrian centres and animal breeding facilities.
The standard does not apply to the elimination of commercial or industrial dusts, e. g. in wood or metal processing plants or to the healthcare and treatment areas of hospitals as well as other rooms where wet disinfection and wet cleaning of the floors are necessary for hygienic reasons.
The standard provides information for planners, building owners, operators and users of the buildings cited as well as executing installation companies for the planning, calculation and production of central vacuum cleaning systems. The purpose of the standard is to provide recommendations as to how finedust contamination of buildings can be reduced or avoided, thereby protecting people's health.
Figure 1 shows a central vacuum cleaning system with its main components; Table 1 lists the corresponding symbols and abbreviations.
