inactive
Organization: LUL
Publication Date: 1 August 2015
Status: inactive
Page Count: 8
scope:

This guidance document applies to all London Underground escalators and lifts on the London Underground (LU) Network. It shall apply to all LU direct and contractor staff on the station where the escalator or lift is located for the duration of the work.

Purpose

This procedure describes the activities undertaken to ensure that planned work undertaken on escalators or lifts complies with the requirements of LU's standard S1088 (Managing Changes to Stations Fire Precautions).

Following the introduction of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, all applications for planned work, which may or may not involve obstruction to means of escape, either permanent or temporary (including hoardings) must be requested using the S1088 process.

In the case of escalators or lifts, this shall include any planned work that either:

  • requires the erection of hoardings to segregate the work area from areas that are open to other staff and/or the general public; and/or
  • has a planned duration in excess of 48 hours.

NOTE: Failure to comply with Standard S1088 may put LU in breach of legislation which could result in prosecution.
