The purpose of this Defence Standard is to provide information and guidance on the various methods of locking screwed fasteners. It describes each method and outlines the advantages and disadvantages, thus enabling the designer or user to select the most appropriate method for any particular application.

The choice of locking methods to be used in aerospace vehicles and their close support equipment is governed by specific requirements for which the Ministry of Defence PE Controller of Aircraft is responsible. These requirements are detailed in various Air Publications and SBAC Standards.
