This procedure is used to examine a rail when piping or vertical longitudinal splitting is suspected in the head or web. If the presence of such a defect is confirmed, this procedure may be used to assess the length of the rail defect.

A rail is considered suspect and examined by this procedure if:-

  • There are visual indications of piping or vertical longitudinal splitting.
  • There is a loss or partial loss of the rail bottom signal as defined in procedure NR/L3/TRK/055/U15 or when examining rail ends.
  • Bulging of the head or web is detected.

Purpose

This ultrasonic procedure is to be used to determine the presence of and classify vertical longitudinal defects to prevent broken rails..
