scope:
This procedure applies to all pearlitic rails in plain line Switches & Crossings (S&C), adjustment switches, welds and weld repairs, as far as coupling conditions allow.
NOTE: Where coupling conditions are not possible see other approved procedures.
This procedure applies to the defect types:
a) horizontal defects;
b) tache ovales (internal transverse defect);
c) transverse defects (sub-surface);
d) transverse indications from wheelburns;
e) internal defects from MMA repairs;
f) suspect vertical longitudinal splitting (piping);
g) suspect hydrogen inclusions (shatter cracking);
h) defective head repair welds;
i) transverse indications from RCF discontinuities;
j) internal discontinuities from within aluminothermic welds (ATW); and
k) suspect transverse indications reported by the UTU's using 37° transducer.
This procedure also confirms 37° transverse indications reported by the UTUs.
Purpose
This procedure is applied when using the Roller Search Unit (RSU) Rail Testing System (RSU-RTS) for the detection of rail flaws, the conformation of UTU suspects including the detection of flaws detected by the 37° transducers.
