The contents of this standard apply to all running lines on Railtrack controlled infrastructure.

PURPOSE

This specification defines: -

• The reporting requirements for broken and defective rails, with which all personnel with a responsibility for rail inspection, testing, removal or insitu repair are required to comply.

• The classification system for broken and defective rails.

• The minimum requirements for the broken and defective rail management system.

• The rail failure database and Raildata systems.

The standard does not define inspection requirements or actions to be taken upon discovery of broken or defective rails. These are covered by RT/CE/S/103 and any supplementary Permanent Way Special Instructions (PWSI) in force at the time.
