This standard applies to the inspection and maintenance of switches on running lines and sidings. This applies to all types of switch machining in both bullhead and flatbottom rail sections.

The scope of the standard excludes:

a) the derailing switch of trap and catch points;

b) switch diamonds; and

c) adjustment switches.

Purpose

This standard details the inspection regime, monitoring procedures, immediate actions and essential maintenance to be undertaken at switches to control the risk of derailment, maximise asset life and deliver good operational availability.

This document provides a process to mitigate the risks associated with NR/GN/TRK/8001/0601 (Switches and Crossing: Failure to provide correct guidance of train wheels).
