This specification applies to all switches in Railtrack's permanent way which may at any time or circumstance be used in a facing direction. However it should be noted that the switch wear gauge can be used only on chamfered and undercut switches.

PURPOSE

This specification describes the inspection and monitoring procedures and essential maintenance to be undertaken at switches, to reduce the risk of derailment.

It identifies the potential derailment hazards and remedial measures necessary.
