This document covers S&C layouts, sub-assemblies and components which are not in an "as new" condition but are being considered for installation into running lines or sidings owned by Network Rail.

This document covers the assessment for the removal of S&C assets, recycling, refurbishment and the requirements for reuse.

NOTE: All S&C types would be considered if recovered unused.

The scope of this standard excludes:

• Used switch diamond, slips, undercut switch, tandems or shallow depth switches.

• Mill Heat Treated rail (R350HT) manufacturer prior to 2006.

• Microalloyed Head Hardened rail (R370CrHT).

Purpose

This document specifies the criteria for the reuse of switches and crossings (S&C) to:

a) control the specification of the re-production of used switch and crossing (S&C) units;

b) ascertain their suitability for reuse;

c) define permitted remedial work which economically maximises their viability; and

d) identify restrictions of reuse in certain circumstances.
