scope:
This procedure covers the following: - all pearlitic rails in plain line Switches & Crossings (S&C), Adjustment Switches, welds and weld repairs, as far as coupling conditions allow. Where coupling conditions are not possible see other approved procedures.
This procedure is capable of detecting the following defect types:-
- Horizontal defects
- Tache Ovales (Internal transverse defect)
- Transverse defects (sub-surface)
- Transverse Indications from Wheelburns
- Internal defects from MMA repairs
- Suspect Vertical Longitudinal Splitting (Piping)
- Suspect Hydrogen inclusions (Shatter cracking)
- Defective Head Repair Welds
- Transverse indications from RCF discontinuities
- Internal discontinuities from within Aluminothermic Welds (ATW)
- Suspect transverse indications reported by the UTU's using 37° transducer
- This procedure confirms 37° transverse indications reported by the UTU's
Purpose
This procedure is applied when using the Sperry Roller Search Unit (RSU) Rail Testing System (RSU-RTS) for the detection of rail flaws, the conformation of UTU suspects including the detection of flaws detected by the 37° transducers.
