This technique applies to the following: - all pearlitic rails in plain line, switches & crossings (S&C), Adjustment Switches and welds, as far as coupling conditions allow.

This procedure is capable of detecting the following defect types that lie directly below the rail web:-

a) Transverse, vertical defects in the rail foot

b) Corrosion pitting of the rail foot

c) Transverse cracks in the rail foot at the pearlitic/stainless boundary of tri metallic welds

Purpose

This procedure applies when using a Roller Search Unit (RSU) for the detection of transverse rail flaws in the rail foot under the web.
