scope:
This technique applies to the following: - all pearlitic rails in plain line Switches & Crossings (S&C), Adjustment Switches and welds, as far as coupling conditions allow. Where coupling conditions are not possible see other approved procedures.
This procedure is capable of detecting the following defect types that lie directly below the rail web:-
- Transverse defects in the centre of the rail foot
- Corrosion pitting of the rail foot (not guaranteed as dependant on location, shape and depth)
- Transverse cracks in the in the centre of the rail foot under the web at the pearlitic / stainless boundary of tri metallic welds.
Purpose
This procedure applies when using the Sperry Roller Search Unit (RSU) Rail Testing System (RSU-RTS) for the detection of transverse rail flaws in the rail foot under the web to prevent rail breaks.
