This procedure specifies how and where to apply ultrasonic procedures U1, U5, U15 & U16 to all switches and crossings manufactured from pearlitic, bainitic or alloyed steel.

Testing frequencies are specified in NR/L2/TRK/001/mod06.

This procedure is capable of detecting the following defect types:-

  • Horizontal defects
  • Bolt hole defects
  • Transverse cracks

Purpose

This ultrasonic procedure defines how to test switches and crossings using approved ultrasonic procedures and can detect the presence of horizontal cracks, bolt hole cracks and transverse cracks in the rail head to prevent broken rails.
