scope:
This specification applies to all aluminothermic welding that may be carried out on, or for casting into, Network Rail managed infrastructure.
This specification identifies the prerequisites for process suppliers and recognises the process supplier as the leading exponent of that process in terms of training, certification and re-certification.
Network Rail's requirements are contained in this specification with a list of approved process suppliers.
The inspection of welds is included in this specification, together with time-based remedial actions.
Purpose
This specification defines the standards to be achieved when aluminothermic welding is carried out, whether in or out of the track, and defines the welding procedures to be used. By adhering to the specifications and standards within this document, the risk of weld failure/break is reduced. The quality of the weld cast is improved and kept within the process supplier's parameters. The safety of the traveling public and staff undertaking aluminothermic welding activities is maintained to the highest levels.
