scope:
The Scope of this Code of Practice applies to waterproofing systems for all new underline bridge decks, and for maintenance and repair or replacement of waterproofing systems to existing underline bridge decks.
It is not applicable to new structures constructed by thrust boring or tunnelling techniques when external faces are inaccessible for the application of waterproofing, or to other parts of underline bridges such as below ground surfaces and abutments.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this Code of Practice is to provide:
• information required by a specifier to ensure that the waterproofing system selected is appropriate to a specific site or underline bridge deck to be waterproofed,
• general guidance on waterproofing systems for use on underline bridge decks to ensure the correct preparation and application of such waterproofing to minimise the potential for early deterioration and loss of structural integrity,
• an understanding of the variables that can arise during waterproofing.
It is suitable for use by designers and specifiers, constructors, maintainers, and Railtrack staff involved in the procurement of design, construction and maintenance of underline bridge decks.
The application of an effective waterproofing system to an underline bridge deck will significantly extend the structural life of a bridge as the structural life of a bridge is directly related to the effectiveness of the waterproofing system. The effectiveness of a waterproofing system is particularly dependent on design and detailing, together with skill and care taken during the preparation of the substrate and application of the waterproofing system. Other factors that can affect the effectiveness of a waterproofing system include the knowledge of the specifier and detailer, trained and certificated operatives, a competent subcontractor, satisfactory working conditions, and well maintained equipment.
