This module applies to the inspection of working underground mines.

This module applies to the Technical Authority - Principal Mining Engineer (PME) and the Route Asset Manager - (Geotechnical) (RAM (G)).

This module does not cover:

a) the inspection of abandoned underground mines (refer to NR/L2/CIV/191/07);

b) the inspection of surface mines and tips (refer to NR/L2/CIV/191/03);

c) natural cavities created by dissolution or erosion;

d) subterranean spaces which are not mine workings.

Purpose 

This module mitigates the risk of loss of track geometry or support from working underground mines. 

Inspection of working underground mines is one of the risk mitigation options for assessing underground mining hazards adjacent to, or beneath, the operational railway. 

NOTE: The Mines (Working Facilities and Support) Act 1974 may afford Network Rail (NR) the right to examine working underground mine workings.
